1. What cookies are

2. How we use them

• Analytics: Show us, in aggregate, which stories readers value and how the site performs.
• Advertising: Used by third-party ad partners to show relevant ads, cap repetition, and measure results. These fund the site and keep it free to read.

3. The cookies on this site

• Essential and functional. WordPress, our website platform, may set cookies for security and for the forms you fill in. Once the consent banner is active, a cookie also stores the choices you made so we don’t ask you on every visit.
• Analytics. We use Google Analytics, which sets cookies such as _ga and _ga_* to distinguish visitors and sessions. The data reaches us only in aggregate.
• Advertising. When ads are served by our partners, including Mediavine and Google. Those partners and their vendors may set cookies and use identifiers for ad delivery, frequency capping, personalization (where you’ve consented), and measurement. Because advertising vendors change over time, the complete and current list always lives in the consent banner’s vendor list, and the data involved is described in our privacy policy.

4. Consent and the cookie banner

If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, non-essential cookies (analytics and advertising) load only after you agree, through a consent banner provided by a Google-certified consent management platform. You can accept, decline, or fine-tune by category and by vendor.

5. How to control cookies

• The consent banner: The easiest control, where it appears (see section 4).
• Your browser: Every major browser lets you view, block, and delete cookies in its privacy settings, per site or entirely. Blocking essential cookies may break parts of the site, like forms.
• Analytics: The Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
• Personalized ads: Google Ads Settings, aboutads.info/choices, optout.networkadvertising.org, and in Europe youronlinechoices.eu.
• Global Privacy Control: We honor the GPC browser signal where the law requires.

6. Third-party cookies

Some cookies are set not by us but by third parties whose technology appears on our pages, like advertising vendors, analytics providers, and embedded content such as social media posts or videos inside stories. 7. How long cookies last

Session cookies disappear when you close your browser. Persistent cookies stay until they expire or you delete them; for example, Google Analytics cookies typically last up to two years, advertising cookies range from days to about a year depending on the vendor, and your consent choice is usually remembered for around twelve months before the banner asks again.

8. Changes to this policy

As our tools and advertising partners evolve, this policy will be updated to match, and the date at the top will change with it. The consent banner’s vendor list always reflects the current state, even between updates to this page.
